There was a big event happened in 1964 Alaska that shocked the whole world. A mega thrust earthquake which had a magnitude of 9.2 broke out suddenly in March 27 1964, Alaska, and began at 5:36p.m. It brough hundreds of death and a large sum of economic loss to the whole Alaska and surrounding.
The 1964 Alaska Earthquake is known as the Great Alaska Earthquake, the Potage Earthquake and the Good Friday Earthquake. On account of its high magnitude, The earthquake becomes the most powerful recorded earthquake in North American history and the second largest earthquake all over the world. It occurred in Prince William Sound region of Alaska, and the epicenter was about 10 km east of College Fjord. The earthquake kept shaking for about 3 minutes, and also bought after shock and tsunamis to the nearby.
The natural disaster brought numerous damage to the whole district by different levels and even effect another country, Canada. One of the biggest city in Alaska called Anchorage was suffered the most damage- part of the downtown Anchorage suffered landslide damage result in a large number of structures collapsed and death. Infrastructure for citizens’ work and recreation were destroyed that cause a large number of economic loss and inconvenient life for citizens. Else where in Alaska were endanger as well. Tsunamis and earthquake caused fire in native villages and big cities. Therefore the infrastructure and house were destroyed,too. Outside of Alaska, the British Columbia, A province in Canada have also gotten influenced by this earthquake. A tsunami reached to Tofino, on the exposed west coast of Vancouver island and then it traveled up to other cities. This tsunami brought economic loss of about 10 million dollars in British Columbia in the ended. Also, elsewhere in the world towns along the United States Pacific Northwest and Hawaii were damaged by different levels. During the earthquake, over 131 people died as a result of earthquake, including 9 people as a result of earthquake itself, 106 from subsequent tsunamis in Alaska, and 16 from tsunamis in Oregon and California.
